I Don't Have Time For That

I mean, think about it! I was a Program Manager at a major defense contractor! I HAD to work long hours, check my iPhone around the clock, and travel on short notice. Then, there was my family. My husband and daughter NEEDED me to manage the house, homework, school projects, extracurricular activities and so on. Needless to say, I was feeling exhausted and depleted. I could barely keep up with everyone else’s needs, so time for myself wasn’t even a blip on my radar.

Thankfully, a few years ago my neighbor invited me to join a book club. It was there that I met some of the most amazing women and my closest friends. Through their influence (and a few more self help books), I began to see my life as an endless cycle of checking off boxes on a list of things that really didn't matter to ANYONE. I had spent my entire adult life working toward this point. I had a successful career, a wonderful family and all the best things, but I wasn’t enjoying it. After all, I was “too busy”.

Luckily, I was able to recognize this and make some changes. I asked for and accepted help. I examined what I was spending my time on and eliminated things that didn't add value to myself or the people I cared about. I made a list of things I was passionate about and resolved to make them part of my life again.

So, what’s holding you back from things you enjoy? I encourage you to take a hard look at how you spend your time and think about making one small change. You might just surprise yourself and find time to finish that book, exercise, have dinner with friends, or simply get more sleep on a daily basis!

I will submit to you that I am “busier” today than I was a few years ago; yet I’m happier, more relaxed, and healthier than ever! Taking a break from the office on nights and weekends has made me a more focused leader. Learning to prioritize my time allows me to focus on the things that matter most. I’ll be the first to admit, it’s not easy. I still struggle with it daily because being “ too busy” makes me feel important and needed. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but it is possible… and I promise you, it is worth the effort!
